The Quality Inn &
Wayfarer Convention Center, nestled
in Bedford, NH
is located on the site
of the historical John
Goffe's Mill. "Hunter
John" was granted
the land as a bonus for
his services to the colony
in the wars against the
French and the Indians.
In 1744, he built the
original water powered
saw and gristmill with
his son, Colonel John
Goffe and grandson, Major
John Goffe. The mill was
owned and operated for
more than two centuries
by his descendants.
In 1845, when John Goffe's
great-grandson, Theodore
"Ode" Goffe,
was the proprietor, the
mill burned. He rebuilt
it the following year
with new and improved
mechanical devices, including
an iron turbine in place
of the wooden wheel.
Time, and an unusually
heavy flood in the spring
of 1909, caused the mill
to collapse. It was abandoned
and the buildings on the
land were leased for farming.
Twenty years later, Dr
George Woodbury, an eighth
generation descendent
of John Goffe, returned
to his ancestral home
in Bedford, NH. The site
was composed of a wood
lot, a vacant house and
the crumbling ruins of
the old mill. Dr. Woodbury
restored the mill and
operated it through the
1940's and 1950's.
In 1962, the Dunfey brothers
opened up the Wayfarer
Motor Inn. The mill was
incorporated into the
gift shop and the buildings
were set at different
levels to honor the contour
of the land.
Due to the Dunfey family's
political prominence in
the community, the hotel
became a center for political
and social gatherings.
The Wayfarer Inn has been
a large part of the New
Hampshire “First
in the Nation” Presidential
Primaries ever since the
hotel opened.
In 1986, the Flatley Corporation
purchased the hotel and
changed the name to the
Tara Wayfarer Inn. This
ownership lasted until
1997, when Flatley sold
their 16 hotels to Starwood
Hotels and Resorts Worldwide.
In September 2003, Jiten
Hotel Management, Inc.,
purchased The Wayfarer
Inn. Based in Brockton,
MA, Jiten owns and operates
over a dozen properties
in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
With a strong commitment to the New
Hampshire hospitality community and seeing the potential
of the Quality Inn & Wayfarer Convention Center, Jiten
embarked on an ambitious restoration of the hotel. Phase
one of the restoration included the convention center facilities,
guessrooms and exterior siding along with landscaping. Phase two,
restoration to the public areas was completed in 2005.
In 2007 the Quality Inn & Wayfarer Convention Center partnered with
Celebrations Distincitive Catering, Inc. Celebrations now manages
the Wayfarer Convention Center and all food and beverage at the hotel,
enhancing the quality and service that we both provide to our guests.
